The Port des Salines Ecomuseum is a public entity managed by the Association of the Île d’Oléron Municipalities. With recent competences in the cultural field, the association of municipalities has had other museum spaces since 2006 (The museum of Île d’Oléron and the Maison Paysanne), a space to store museum collections and a network of sites “Oléron, nature and culture”.
The Port des Salines approved by the Pôle Nature aims to enhance and make visitors aware of the history of salt and especially the salt production of the island. Therefore, the ecomuseum presents permanent and temporary exhibitions, tour guides of the salt working sites, organizes events, workshops and other interventions directly ‘in the field’, undertakes research, and pursues a policy of extending its collections.
